Dewormers
Dewormers help remove parasites from your pet. It is recommended to give regular dewormer treatments to your dog and cats at least once every six months.
Worms can cause problems for your pet like diarrhea, weight loss, blood in the stool, general poor appearance, dry hair, and vomiting. Some infestations may not even show any symptoms.
The four primary types of canine worms are Hookworms, Roundworms, Tapeworms, and Whipworms.
Roundworms most commonly infect puppies. Tapeworms can be a major problem if flea infestations are high. Although roundworms and tapeworms can be seen without a microscope other worms are not so easily diagnosed. Once in a while adult whipworms can be spotted in your dog's stool if the infestation has already caused weightloss or debilitation in the dog.
There are four species of hookworms that infect dogs (Ancylostoma braziliense, Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma tubaeforme, and Uncinaria stenocephala).
A. caninum is the most common hookworm in dogs and causes the worst disease.
A. tubaeforme is more common in cats than dogs, and is less likely to cause severe disease than A. caninum.
U. Stenocephala is more likely to infect Dogs in the Northern states and in Canada as it prefers cold climates.
Signs of hookworm infection include weight loss, pale color, black or tarry looking stools, weakness, and anemia.
Roundworms (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina) are found in the intestines of dogs.
Tapeworms (Taenia pisiformis, Dipylidium canium, Enchinococcus granulosus, and Echinococcus multilocularis) are found in the intestines of dogs.
Whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) are one of the most common parasitic worms of dogs in North America. They live in the lower aspects of the intestines (the cecum and colon) where they latch on to feed. Sometimes they cause no problems at all, but can cause the abdomen to be upset (colic) or diarrhea, often tainted by blood and mucus.
Early diagnosis is critical to keeping your pet healthy. If worms are suspected take a stool sample to your veterinarian for microsopic analysis.
